Event: Eco-Sangha Hike - Nicholas Flats Date(s): 01/21/07 Description: Nicholas Flat Trail Highlights: Spectacular ocean views, rolling grass hills, picturesque pond Near: Malibu, CA Distance: 8 miles round trip Elevation Gain: 1800 ft Hike Time: 4.5 hours Difficulty: Moderate Trail Condition: Well maintained trail HikeType: Out and Back NOTE: Bring water, snack or lunch, good hiking shoes & sun hat. 8 miles total, but fun miles, and we'll take it easy for out-of-shapers. Summary: Although there is not much shade on this hike, the ocean views and spring wildflowers are spectacular. A perfect place for a picnic is Nicholas Pond, which I found to be very beautiful. For the more adventurous, take the rough trail around the pond and peak over the rocks on the far side of the pond for a view of some stunning cliffs and the far off ocean. The first 3 miles of the trail is a steady upward march of about 1600 foot, so make sure you are in shape for this hike. Location: From the west end of the Santa Monica Freeway in Santa Monica, head up-coast on Pacific Coast Highway about 25 miles to Leo Carrillo State Beach. The signed Nicholas Flat Trailhead is located a short distance past the park entry kiosk, opposite the day use parking area. Parking is available in the lot for a fee or along the highway at no cost. Time: Meet at trailhead at 9:30 am Cost: No cost except for parking fee at trailhead lot Coordinator: Devin Wallace, (310) 384-9279, devinwalla@gmail.com
